Abstract

The peoples conquered by Russia differed from each other greatly in their level of development, language, culture, religion, tradition of statehood, etc. If some still lived a nomadic and patriarchal life, others, for example, Georgia, had a long tradition of statehood, independent culture, Christian civilization and a solid national identity. And this was not only in the past, although Georgia could not maintain its unity in the new era, but it did not lose its statehood. Georgian principalities - these small "Georgians" were separate state units and continued to exist until the active establishment of Russia in the South Caucasus. It is necessary to say that most of the peoples whose destiny was the colonial yoke of Russia, while being incorporated into the bosom of the Romanov empire, experienced the process of disintegration and were weakened due to civil wars, attacks of neighboring aggressive states or other factors.
